 PIONEER PRESS Dictionary offered in Somali, Spanish Building on the success of its Hmong-English dictionary, St. Paul Public Schools is issuing versions in Somali and Spanish this fall. The dictionaries — each of which features pictures and about 800 words divided into categories such as food, animals and family — are given at the student placement center to every family who speaks Hmong, Somali or Spanish. They also are being placed in classrooms and libraries in schools throughout the district, said Valeria Silva, director of the district's English Language Learners department. All three dictionaries were created by district staff, Silva said, to provide more user-friendly materials for students learning English. The Somali and Spanish versions debuted in late August. "There's nothing out there in Hmong and Somali like this," Silva said. "I think it's just so needed." The district also sells the dictionaries for $14 each, but the revenue generated just covers the printing and other costs, Silva said.
